The Texas Bucket List: H&H Car Wash in El Paso

howdy and welcome to the Texas bucket list the show that celebrates the people places and experiences you’ll find right here in the Lone Star State my name is Shane McAuliffe it this week we start things off by going west way west to El Paso just to get a car wash and meet one interesting gentleman with one interesting eatery the West Texas town of El Paso dang guys Senora well yes you’ll find a car wash doing its best keep the dust of the desert at bay we give a service and we love owner Manor Haddad and accept one of my butt heads you know pretty good guy to work for is a local legend I have a hard time hearing and I’m old and I’m dumb as hell so come on in the ancient age car wash has a squeaky-clean reputation when it comes to washing cars Maynard on the other hand is about as colorful as they come I was gonna tell you this story I’ll clean it up since 1934 Maynard has been a part of the Sun City I grew up on this block I was born right over there in those days they didn’t go to the hospital they just dropped you’re kept going and he pretty much tells it like it is but what for some people have little problems handle it but you know it just makes things so simple the only place in town where the customer is always wrong strangely charming governor Perry’s wife used to come in here and there I like to shoot the oldest of six children Maynard’s fathered came to the states from Syria and in October of 1958 he opened the H and H in my day I kick everybody’s butt cuz I could work Maynard may not move as fast as he once did but he still runs the place and provides the entertainment by just being himself but the food that you’ll find while waiting for your wheels is what’s really the main attraction we think about it it really makes a lot of sense the carwash in the restaurant we have some of the best Mexican restaurants anywhere but they’re Mexican restaurants they’re not Mex Tex Tex Mex they’re like will everybody stops by any time to get the car work Anita who huevos rancheros chile relleno sand tacos are the talk of the town you asked me what my favorite place in the world is they changed our life the one thing that’s made our place what it is is we’ve been able to maintain the same cook since 77 Tony Accardo has been in charge of the comida that brings in the crowd it’s got some really authentic Mexican food and El Paso’s not tex-mex my lemon is to say it’s old-school at this classic carwash might not be an accurate enough description in a world where political correctness reigned supreme politics I hate it Maynard has no interest in sugarcoating the way he feels or the way he does business that’s the problem too much thinking you just get up and do not very good with complaints despite is demeanor it’s Maynard’s passion that pulls through are you fired up you need help I love working and I get to experience people like with people like you all bless you met those folks in there so Maynard sits sprouting off you gotta be tough endearing himself to solve and he’s part of the reason why I love coming here while others aren’t sure how to react to his random brands give me some more PS in the end if you can cut through to the core of this sometimes crotchety but cared for man you’ll find a very spirited Texan who simply takes life one car at a time I think it is part of the culture of El Paso I mean I just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside and just the whole el paso experience when I get here add it to get up and be grateful of people they give serve it’s his passion this is love have no idea if it makes money or not but I feel beer until the day does [Music]
